Flag Change – What Happens to Class Notations?

 When a ship changes flag (re-flagging), the effect on class notations depends on whether the classification society remains the same or changes.

Case 1: Flag Changes, Class Society Remains the Same

Example: Ship changes from Panama flag to Indian flag but remains with DNV

✅ What Happens?

  • Class notations remain unchanged

  • Hull & machinery class continue as before

  • Additional notations (E0, DP2, Ice class, etc.) remain valid

  • Class certificate remains continuous (no break in class)

⚠ However:

  • Statutory certificates must be re-issued under the new flag

  • New flag state endorsements required

  • Carving & Marking note updated


Case 2: Flag Changes AND Class Society Changes

Example: From Lloyd's Register to Indian Register of Shipping

✅ What Happens?

  • Previous class is withdrawn

  • New class society conducts:

    • Transfer of Class (TOC) survey

    • Review of records

    • Condition of Class (if any)

  • New class notations issued as per new society rules

⚠ Important:

  • Notations may change format (symbols differ between societies)

  • Equivalent notation may be given

  • Some additional notations may require fresh verification
