When is ISSC Issued for a New Ship

 A new ship must:

  1. Have an approved Ship Security Plan (SSP)

  2. Appoint a Company Security Officer (CSO)

  3. Appoint a Ship Security Officer (SSO)

  4. Install and test:

    • Ship Security Alert System (SSAS)

    • Security communication systems

  5. Undergo an Initial Security Verification

After successful verification → ISSC is issued.

Legal Basis

  • SOLAS Chapter XI-2

  • ISPS Code (Part A – Mandatory)

Validity of ISSC

  • Valid for 5 years

  • Subject to:

    • At least one intermediate verification (between 2nd and 3rd anniversary date)

If Ship Needs to Sail Before Final Verification?

A Short-Term ISSC may be issued:

  • Valid for maximum 6 months

  • Given when:

    • Ship is delivered

    • Flag transfer

    • Company change

    • New ship entering service

Conditions:

  • SSP approved

  • Security measures implemented

  • CSO & SSO appointed

Documents Required Onboard

  • ISSC (or Short-Term ISSC)

  • Approved SSP (confidential)

  • Continuous Synopsis Record (CSR)

  • Security records & drills log

Why is a man hole door elliptical in shape?

Any opening in a pressure vessel is kept to a minimum and for a man entry an elliptical hole  is lesser in size than the corresponding circular hole. More over it is prime concern to have a  smoothed generous radius at the corners to eliminate stress concentration. Hence other  geometrical shapes like rectangle and square are ruled out.  To compensate for the loss of material in the shell due to opening, a doubler ring has to be  provided around the opening. The thickness of the ring depends on the axis length along the  dirrection in which the stresses are maximum and the thickness of the shell. It is important to  align the minor axis along the length of the vessel, as the stress in this direction is  maximum.
